Explanation: Dontalian

Why do I need a good grade for college?

When I go to college I need a good grade for when I go to enrol. The school will want to know what I’m good at and what I need help with.

I need to work hard in Year 8 so when I show them my report they know what I’m working hard on and what I can achieve.

When I’m at college I have to try hard to achieve goals so I can be what I want to be. They want to know what I can do so they can teach me new things.

College is a place where big kids go to learn about more things and so they are ready to get a job or go to university. When I do work at college it going to be challenging so I need to make sure I have the skills I need to help me understand the harder work.

By getting good grades at school in Year 8 I will get to choose the college I want to go to. The college will want high standards so Year 8 is the time for me to focus.

Why is Facebook is a Problem?

Shockingly, it has been discovered that one and a half billion people log onto Facebook everyday! With so many people using Facebook lots of problems are happening on this social networking site.

Firstly problems start happening when people write negative things about other people. Lots of people see these comments and start thinking the wrong thing. This is because people believe what is written. When rumours start it becomes serious and is called cyber bullying.

Cyber bulling is a huge problem because it affects a lot of people. Cyber bullies post false information which makes victims feel embarrassed and humiliated as other people are commenting on things that aren't true. This means Facebook can be misleading.

Misleading people is another danger of Facebook. You can pretend to be someone else, or you can be tricked by someone who is pretending to be someone else. To make sure you are safe think about who you are adding as a friend on Facebook.

Remember staying safe is one of the biggest problems on Facebook and is the most important thing. Think about what you post, what you read and what you comments on. With one and half billion users everyday things go wrong because on a social networking site everybody can see what you post.

Migration Pargraphs

After being introduced to some of the vocabulary that is important to our 'Changing Faces' topic, we worked collaboratively to create paragraphs that reflect our understanding.


New Zealand is a multicultural society. We live in harmony because we are tolerant and show respect to all beliefs. The population in New Zealand has increased because of migration. All New Zealand citizens live in a conflict free environment. We make sure that all new comers are able to adapt in New Zealand and all cultures are able to respect one another. Every citizen in New Zealand is able to bring ideas from their home country.

People from other countries come to New Zealand and give us ideas from their country to make a change(eg food, clothes, style, shoes, technology and many other things.) We show respect to others that come to New Zealand and live in harmony. NZ is also a multicultural society which means it is made up of many cultures.

New Zealand is a multicultural society that has a diverse population. We are tolerant of the change that has been done because of migration and accept the differences of everyone around us. We all shows respect to each other’s ideas and beliefs. We adapt and include everyone’s cultures for the sole purpose of living in harmony.

New Zealand is a multicultural  society. Our population keeps on growing because of migration. We live in harmony with each other and show respect to all cultures. People move to NZ and come with great ideas (e.g food) Everyone in NZ has many different beliefs. We are tolerant towards each other. NZ is diverse in cultures and has changed in culture over time. New Zealanders are able to adapt to anything.

In New Zealand our population lives in harmony. We need to respect other people’s cultures and not making fun of how they look or how the speak, we need to not laugh at them when we they pronounce something wrong. We have to show tolerance when someone is talking. We are lucky that people from other cultures come with their food ideas to New Zealand.

Cultures. with so many Multicultural Ideas we have to be tolerant and respect all beliefs. We try to  change and adapt so that our population becomes a melting pot. We show a lot of harmony because migration in New Zealand is diverse.

In New Zealand we Respect everyone. We are tolerant of all cultures. We accept people that migrate.   New Zealand is a multicultural society. New Zealand has a diverse population filled with different cultures. Change is okay as we have learnt to adapt to it. We respect everyone's beliefs and we don't mock each other.  We are a growing population in this country and we are teaching others how we live here.   People from differents cultures come and bring their ideas. In New Zealand we live in harmony.

Rongoa Information Reports

Following our trip to the Botanical Gardens we put together this collection of information reports that tell what Rongoa is and how it was used. Everyone who worked on this presentation used their writing toolkits to collaboratively proofread each other's work by being a critical friend and giving feedback and feed forward. Well done everyone, you all did a great job!

Drumming by Piripi



Rhythm Interactive came to PBS and the whole school got to play the african drums at the same time. Everyone really enjoyed listening to the rhythm and trying to follow what Jonny was drumming. Piripi was amazed at how good at drumming everyone was.

Continuing to build our Room 9 learning community



This picture shows Dontalian creating a google presentation of one of the ways we continue to build our Room 9 learning community. He used the Ipad to capture images of Room 9 working collaboratively as Critical Friends. Being a critical friend means you have a forensic look at your partner's work. You work together  to find the bits that they got wrong and help them fix their errors. We use the ideas in our Room 9 Writing Toolkit to help us make changes.

Topic Challenge

Room 9's challenge was to find the answers to each of the three set questions then explain their findings in 25 words. They have done a great job of finding the facts and putting them into their own words.


What is Pollination?
Pollination is a process which pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the plant. Thereby  it makes it possible to Fertilization  and reproduction.


Explain in 25 words that the role bees have in a plant reproduction?
Bees help plants grow. Without bees we wouldn’t get chocolate, coffee, bread and most other foods that we have today.  They help us alot.


Explain in 25 words how plant reproduction processes produce much of our food.
The plants reproduces more so than  before, because the bees have helped it grow  by transferring pollen from one flower to the female flowers stigma.

Pollination is when Pollinators (Bees,Moths,Butterflies) get pollen from an anther(Male) and transfer the pollen into the stigma(Female).


What role do bees play in plant reproduction?
Bees transfer pollen from a male flower into a female flower’s stigma.


Explain in 25 words how plant reproduction processes produce much of our food.
If this process didn’t exist we wouldn’t have foods such as fries that are produced by potatoes which need plant reproduction to grow.

Bees fly to plants. They grab the pollen. Bees carry pollen to other plants. The pollen jumps on to the plant to help it grow.

Plant reproduction is creating more plants. More plants mean more fruits and more food that grow in the ground to eat.

This is me playing soccer with Pah Nwee, Jacob and Tamim. We liked the crossbar challenge the best. We had to try and hit the crossbar by kicking the ball. It was fun.

Exploring Bias

This morning we looked how we could clearly explain bias in a paragraph. We used examples from well known fairytales to show how bias can affect your opinion.



Bias is having a strong opinion on something based on your viewpoint. Bias is like a coin, one side is heads and the other is tales. Heads is subjective which means that you let your prior knowledge help you state your judgement and tales is objective which means that you don’t let prior knowledge cloud your opinion. An example of using both coin sides in the same story is Three Little Pigs. If I were to use the subjective side to state my judgement I would feel very sorry for the Three Little Pigs and think that the Wolf was a very bad person. But if I were to use the objective side to state my judgment I would think that The wolf was just trying to say hello to the new neighbours in the neighbourhood and probably was just a bit hungry.

Bias changes the way you look at characters in a book. Bias can be subjective and objective. Subjective means you make an opinion on what you already know. Bias can also be objective which means you make an opinion on what you have just heard for the first time. In the story The 3 little pigs, the pigs injure the wolf. The pigs did a horrible thing by burning someone alive. They heated up a cauldron with water and just let the wolf drop into the burning water. This was my opinion which was subjective since I believe burning someone alive is horrible and mean. If I didn’t use what I already know I would feel sorry for the pigs since the wolf did blow down their houses and tried to eat them, that would be very scary.

Bias is your own opinion or judgement you make through your own point of view. Bias is like a coin with two sides: subjective and objective. Subjective means you use your prior knowledge to make a decision. Objective is when you don’t allow your prior knowledge to interfere with your decision. Having read the Three Little Pigs, I know the wolf demolished the two houses and he attempted murder. He makes the wrong decisions and is blinded by revenge. He was attempting murder and vandalising the Pig's property. I’m being subjective and I know that what the wolf did was wrong because vandalising and attempting murder is wrong. On the other hand, if I don’t use my prior knowledge, I think that the wolf was just trying to be friendly and the pig’s were just being cruel to him. Now, I’m being objective and not letting my prior knowledge interfere with my statement.

Bias changes the way you see things. There are two types of bias. One is subjective and one is objective. Subjective is when people use what they know to make an opinion. Objective is when people make opinions about something they are learning about for the first time. In the story of The Three Pigs people think the wolf is a bad person. If my opinion is subjective I know that he destroyed houses and tried to kill the pigs so he is not a good character because he did mean things. If my opinion is objective I think the wolf was just hungry so he isn’t really a bad character. He was just looking for food.
