Year 8 taster at Tamaki College

On Friday our Year 8's spent had a taster day at Tamaki College. They really enjoyed the hands on experience of what a day as a Year 9 student might look like. A huge thank you to Tamaki College for hosting our students. Here are their reflections of their taster day.

Sylis' Reflection:

Today the Y8s went to Tamaki College and stayed there for the day to experience what it was like in college classrooms. We had timetables and we had to be organised. There were some Y9 students guiding us around the college. First we had Maths with Mr Jones. In Maths we played battleships. Then we had Science with Mr Stoddard. In Science we did some experiments with static electricity. Next we had lunch. For lunch we had Subway and it was delicious. At lunch some students got rewarded $5 to go and spend at the tuck shop. Next we had English with Mr Stevenson. We were finding visual images to make connections with words that we had to memorise. The last thing that we did was PE with Mr Moyes. We played turbo touch. It was a really fun day and a good way to experience what it was like to be a Y9 student. Thank you Tamaki College for organising the fun day that we had.

Te Wai's Reflection:

Today the year 8’s went to Tamaki College to learn about what it is like at college. Before we started we did our usual tech classes and had our first session with Mr Grundy about making stained glass. After tech we had our morning tea and after that we went to maths with Mr Jones. We played battleships, it was fun. Then we went to science with Mr Stoddard and learnt about static electricity and how negative and positive charges can attract and detract. When there are two opposite charges they attract and when there are two of the same charge they try and get away from each other we had an example of this when Lyndon was touching static electricity his hair was starting to stick up. When that was finished we had Subway for lunch which was delicious. After lunch we went to English with Mr Stevenson where we had to memorise 10 words and get the corresponding pictures and finally we went to PE Mr Moyes and we played turbo touch. Thank you Tamaki Collage for a great day of learning and fun.

CJ's Reflection:

On Friday all the year 8's went to Tamaki College for the day. First we went to hard materials for Tech with Mr Grundy. We are going to make our own class design we had to plan what our design would look like. It could be a mirror or a flower, it can be any thing we want it to be. At 10:50 we walked over to the library to have our morning tea in the library. There were two teachers waiting for us. Mr Dunn and Mr Jones. Mr Jones was the maths teacher. Mr Dunn is the Deputy Principal. After we head off to Mr Jones' classroom for maths. We played a game of battleships. He shared a google draw with us that had a grid with five ships on it and we had to randomly put them anywhere. At 12:00 we went to science. We were learning about static electricity. An example is if you try to put left and right magnets together they will stick, but if you but a left and left magnet together they will try to get as far away as possible from each other. After that we had lunch back at the library, then we had English with Ms Stevenson. In English we had to look at some words carefully and memorise them. We then had to write them down on a document and find images of the words. Our last class was PE. We played a game of turbo touch. My team scored 3, the red team scored 5 and the no bibs score 2. I really had a fun day I would like to thank Tamaki College for welcoming us.

Eric's Reflection:

Today the year 8's, stayed at Tamaki College for an experience day. First we played battle ships in Maths with Mr Jones, that was really fun. Then we went to Science with Mr Stoddard and Mr Singh, they taught us about static energy and we did three experiments. They were really awesome. We then had lunch. I thought that it was really nice that the staff at Tamaki College bought us subway. After lunch we had English with Mr Stevenson, we did a fun activity. We had to find visual images, of the words that we had to remember. Then we went to PE with Mr Moyes, we played turbo touch. That was a really awesome game. I would like to thank the staff at Tamaki College for looking after us.

AJ's Reflection:

Today the year eights from Panmure Bridge School stayed at Tamaki College for a day to experience what it would be like if we decide to go there. First we had technology as normal. We were doing stained glass windows with Mr Grundy. After that we had morning tea. Tamaki College was really kind and provided morning tea and lunch for us. Our first class was Maths and our teacher was Mr Jones. We played a game called Battleships. After that we headed off to Science where we did some cool experiments using static electricity. Our teachers were Mr Stoddard and Mr Singh. Then it was lunch time. We had Subway for lunch. Four of our students who showed the Tamaki College values got a $5 dollar tuck shop voucher. I got a voucher for showing Responsibility. Our next class was English and our teacher was Mr Stevenson. Their we had to look at some words carefully and memorise them. We then had to write them down on a document and find images of the words. Our last class was P.E. Our teacher was Mr Moyes. We played a game of Turbo Touch. I had a really fun day and I would like to give a really big thank you to everyone who looked after us at our time there.

Nazella's Reflection:

Today the year 8's went to Tamaki College to experience what it was like to be a year 9. We followed a normal schedule for year 9's. We first went to Maths with Mr Jones. He taught us about coordinates. To learn about coordinates we played Battleships. We had to ask Mr Jones where his ships were on the grid. After maths, we went to science with Mr Stoddard, where we learned about static energy. We had a few experiments. Our first experiment was rubbing a plastic tube on fabric, then we put it near water. We saw that the water was trying to stick to the plastic tube. After science we had lunch. We had subway, apples, cookies and water. Then we went to English with Mr Stevenson. We were finding visual images of 10 words to make connections with the words. We then went to P.E with Mr Moyes. We played a game called 'Turbo Touch'. This was very fun. We had to get the ball into the rectangle without being touched by the opposing team, or stepping into the rectangle. I had never played this game so it was extremely exciting. Thank you to Tamaki College for welcoming us into your school, and thank you to the Tamaki College teachers for providing such a fun and educational day.

Zahra's Reflection:

Today the year 8's went to Tamaki College to experience secondary school. We had our own year 9 timetable with classes on them. This was a great experience. In science with Mr Stoddard and Mr Singh, we were learning about static energy/electricity. Static electricity is a contrast of electric charges inside or on the surface of a material. In our math classes we had Mr Jones and we played a game of battle ships and learnt about coordinate grids. In our English class with Mr Stevenson, we were finding visual images to make connections with new vocabulary. In our PE class we were playing turbo touch with Mr Moyes.

A big thank you to Tamaki College for hosting us. We all had a fun time and a great day of learning.

Daniel's Reflection:

On Friday, the year eights went to Tamaki College for the whole day to experience what it is like at a college. We had a couple of classes that would be like the classes we would have next year, in Year 9. After interval we had maths and science, and after lunch we had English and PE. Maths was run by Mr Jones, Science was run by Mr Stoddard, English was run by Mr Stevenson and PE was run by Mr Moyes. In Maths we played a game called battleships which is a game where you have to sink all of your opponents ships using co-ordinates. During our time in Science we did some experiments with electricity like making water bend by using a piece of rubber, that was weird how we made the water move in that way. After lunch we went to English where we had to memorize ten words and get some visual images for them. We ended our day with PE where we played a really fun game called turbo touch, which is kind of like touch, but it has different rules and a different setup. We all had an amazing and great time. A big thanks to Tamaki College for providing food (Which was yum!) and transport for us. It was a great day of learning that we all enjoyed.

Calvin's Reflection:

Today the Year 8's went to tech like we always do, then at 10:50 the year 7 and the teachers went back to school and we stayed Tamaki College to experience what college feels like. We had a lot of fun with the teachers there. My favourite activities were PE and Science because in PE we could cooperate and work as a team, and in science the teacher showed us really cool things about static electricity like how to bend water with rubber. Thank you to all the people that made us welcome at Tamaki College.

Mishaan's Reflection:

Today, the year eights went to Tamaki College to see what it is like at College. Tamaki College kindly provided morning tea and lunch for us it was yum. We had a couple of classes to show us what it would be like next year, at college. After interval we had maths and science and after lunch we had English and PE. Maths was run by Mr Jones, science was run by Mr Stoddard we were learning about static electricity. English was run by Mr Stevenson. For English we had to learn 10 words that Mr Stevenson gave us and find images to match them. PE was run by Mr Moyes. We all had an amazing and fun time. A big thank you to Tamaki College for providing transport, food and a fun day of learning.

Oh Hsen's Reflection:

The Year 8's had an experience of what it would be like at Tamaki College, if we enrolled. The first class we went to was maths, we played battleships with Mr Jones. I really enjoyed playing that game. Some people got all of their ships sunk. Some people like Eric didn't get a single one sunk. The next class we went to was Science. We were experimenting with static electricity. Our teacher was Mr Stoddard. We managed to bend water by rubbing a rod with wool.  We then had lunch, for lunch we had subway (it was delicious) and a bottle of water. The most behaved students were rewarded a 5 dollar voucher for the tuck shop. After lunch we went to English class with Mr Stevenson. We had to memorise ten words that were displayed on the screen. We also had to include pictures to go with the words. At the end of the day we had P.E. We played a game called Turbo Touch. Our P.E instructor was Mr Moyes. It was a new fun game to all of us. We all had an amazing day at Tamaki College. We enjoyed learning a bunch of cool things and we would like to say a massive thank you for letting us experience a day at Tamaki College.

Sa Kae's Reflection:

On Friday the year 8 had to stayed at Tamki College. They was a group of year 9 people that were helping us for the day. One of the teacher give all of us a time table of which class are we going. First we started going to Math with Mr Jones. In Math we played a game called battleship. Next was Science and our teachers for Science were Mr Stoddard and Mr Singh. Today in Science we were learning about static electricity and we learnt how to make water bend. Then it was lunch time. For lunch w had an apple, a water bottle, an oats bar and a subway, it was delicious. After lunch the year 9's took us to the room for English. We had to learn 10 words and find pictures to match those words on our chromebooks. The teacher for English was Mr Stevenson. The last one that we did was PE and our teacher for that is Mr Moyes. In PE we were playing Turbo Touch and it was fun to play and also fun to watch the other team playing the Turbo Touch. Thank you to everyone that helped us for the day and the teachers that taught us, I enjoyed my time at Tamaki College and I had fun.
