Life Education - Session 1

Today we had our first sessions with Nicole in the Life Education caravan today. Our lessons today were about our body systems, our brain and our heart.

As part of our first year 8 Life Education Session, we learnt about the body system and how it is important to know how our body works. First talked about how the heart really isn't the shape of the heart inside of you. Nicole ( the teacher) told us that if you put two hearts together it make the heart symbol. We also learnt how our nerves send the messages to our brain wich creates our reaction, it is like a motorway. It was clearly explained because she had a projector where we could see what it actually looked like and what she was talking about. We also played two games, one was where she would call out a number we had to clap that same amount if we did too many, we were out. The next game out of the 5 senses we were using touch so both teams had a race to who could reach the person at the end first both. These games were a lot of fun. I found it useful how the kidneys take water from your brain if you don't drink enough water this creates a headache but is also due to stress.

Today the year 7 went to Life Education. This was the first session of Life Education. Nicole the Life ED teacher she is the one that has been talking to us about our body system like nervous - nerves/reactions, circulatory - blood, muscular - muscles. We have learned a lot in Life ED for our first session. It was good learning also good understanding about our body system. One thing I learned was the heart, Some people think that the heart looks like a heart and it's on the side on your left but it actually looks like your fist and it's in the middle where it has the vanes connected to it. When you break the heart into two parts and connect together it will shape kind of like a love heart and Bob was a hologram.

Huge congratulations Sajiha and Zeba! 1st and 2nd places in the Panmure Bridge School speech competition. You both spoke so confidently and clearly knew your topics. We're all very proud of you!

Zeba's Speech

One child, one book, and one pen can change the world. Malala Yousafzai (pause) an activist for children's rights. She lived in Pakistan, a country where girls had no legal rights to a free education, yet we are taking our learning for granted. Malala was actually shot in the head because she went to school.  Can you believe that?She knew she was in danger. She was being threatened by the Taliban. Yet young, brave and confident Malala risked her life for her education. Would you do the same?

As most of you may know my name is Zeba, and I'm going to tell you why your education matters. Education is a big part of your life even if you don’t think so! It helps you build up your knowledge to make great choices and opinions

Think about your future, think about what your dream job would be. If we take our education seriously and realise education matters, we can reach our long life goal and accomplish what we want .

Did you know we as part of the Manaiakalani are very fortunate? We have digital technology. We  are not oppressed by anyone around us like Malala was. We do not get mocked because of our differences because we all have them and this makes us unique. So we can get along and focus on what is important. What do you love doing most? Is it sports, art, dancing? Whatever it is it all starts right here and the decisions you make about your education. Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.

.Did you know being unfocused on your education means 25% of students are most likely to drop out of school. This means 1 out of 4 students in this class does not take education seriously. Now that’s a lot at risk but this can be prevented with hard work and determination because having the two values you can get anywhere in life but not concentrating on your education and dropping out of school is like throwing a big part of your life away. How would you feel if you ended up being a rubbish truck driver? ( pause 1,2,3) I would absolutely hate that job? This also affects your social life and your family, you will not be able to support your parents How do you think your parents will feel about your future job? taking part in education also means feeling good within because you have worked and achieved your goals. You should be working on being the best you can be.

Education is one of the biggest things that matter in your life, this is something that should not be forgotten. If you are not willing then no one can help you but if you are determined then no one can stop you.

This is my persuasive speech I will be performing to the class on Wednesday. This will determine whether I will be performing a speech in front of the whole school.

Zeba's Cyber Smart message

Zeba is one of our 2016 PBS Manaiakalani leaders. Her Prezi is one of the components she has chosen to complete as she works towards achieving her PBS CARE awards Confidence badge. To share her message within our school Zeba will be presenting and talking about her DLO to our junior classes.

Problem Solving explained by Zeba

What is problem solving and does it only happen in maths?

Problem solving can be used everywhere not just in maths, for example if your trying to earn pocket money, so you try to do different things such as chores. Problem solving is when you are going through the process to find a solution ( answer). Problem solving can be used in maths by writing down your strategy or explaining. When you are problem solving not always the first solution will work. You would be going through different strategies to find the right answer for your question. Overall  problem solving is used in daily life and is very useful

As part of our maths quick writes we wrote a paragraph about problem solving this activity combined both maths and writing. This helps us so that whenever we do a written test that needs us to explain our strategy and show our thinking. This task helped us in writing as we used our rubric and worked with a critical friend to help us structure a paragraph. 

Inclined planes by Yvette, Fine, Sajiha and Zeba

This is the google poster my group and I created based around the inclined plane. This ties in with the work we will be doing in science at our technology. This prepares us for the work we will be doing and builds our knowledge on simple machinery. Our task was to write in 25 words what an inclined plane is and how it works.

Part of our reading we were doing activities about RWC. I worked with Zeba and Tim. We create a DLO about Argentina rugby players and some information. We had added the players of Argentina and their names. Hope you will learn something from this DLO.

Zeba and Oh S'Mar's Maths Challenge

Today in maths we learnt how to play a game called the grid challenge . I played this maths game with Oh'Smar. This game help us practice our times tables and measurements everybody had a lot of fun playing this . To play this game you need two dices and and a grid. 

When you roll the dice you times the two numbers you get and then you create a shape that should have the amount of squares the total you got from you two dice. You should then have an array once you have filled up as much boxes a you can than count the squares that are left out. The one with the least squares left is the winner.

At the end of the game I won by three points.

Key Competencies on Camp

This is a collaborative presentation created by Zeba, Nesi, and Yvette. It includes their predictions on how they might use the key competencies during camp, and how they actually used them during camp. You can see the comparisons before and after. 

This is Fine's Key Competencies Presentation that shows what I thought she needed to do before and after camp. We used these Key Competencies to stay safe,  follow our instructions correctly and make the wise choices.

Before camp Sajiha and Saruja did a presentation to predict which Key Competencies they might use at camp then reflect on what they actually used to help them follow the instructors rules and to follow the right track.

Biased Perspectives

This week we have been looking at how biased perspectives can influence a reader's opinion. We found out that an objective opinion is balanced and shows two perspectives and a subjective opinion is very one sided. These are some of the examples of how we used our new knowledge of bias to change a balanced article into a biased article.

Shantay, Zeba, Sebastian and Oh S'Mar's Inquiry into NZ Citizenship

 Shantay, Zeba, Sebastian and Oh S'Mar have carried out this inquiry into NZ Citizenship. They used their smart searching skills to find and retrieve information. They have acknowledged their sources to show that someone else's thinking has helped them understand the topic more clearly.
