Making an informed choice

Today we had a PBS vote to see which flag we think should be chosen. Each class went to the polling booth and placed a counter in the bucket under the flag they liked the best. Before we could make a decision Room 5 need to have some facts so that the choice they made was informed (made because they knew the story behind each flag). To do this we used 4 -3 -2 -1 to help us gather our own thoughts, share our thinking and listen to the thinking of others. To help us make connections to this topic we created a list of reasons why we would not choose a flag, then used these reasons to collaboratively write an 'up to 50 word' paragraph that explained this.

The Silver Fern Red was the most popular choice in our class, with the Silver Fern Black coming second. This was because my students felt these flags would be recognisable around the world, they had strong connections to New Zealand's history and could see links to their own and other cultures.

Which flag would you choose?

Check It!

Check It! is the film written by, filmed by and put together by the very talented students in Room 5 for the Manaiakalani Film Festival. We saw the idea on You Tube and decided we would create our own version to celebrate the wealth of reading material available to us from the Tamaki College Overdrive site to our very own Panmure Bridge Library.

Drop! Cover! Hold!

At 9.15am along with many other schools in New Zealand, we took part in the national 'Shake out' drill. We did this so that in the event of an earthquake we will know how to try and keep ourselves safe.

Making Healthy Lunches

After our trip to Pak 'N Save on Monday we were given a voucher to buy food to make healthy lunches. Room 5 decided to make healthy wraps. We looked at the nutrition information to make sure the products we bought were healthy. Our friend Greg from SPARK and Miss Donaldson came to help us.

Creating our own Home Learning Tasks

Here we are creating our own home learning tasks. We worked in groups to come up with a list of topics that will help us to practise asking questions and finding information. Each week someone will choose a topic from the topic box then we will create a DLO of our choice to reflect our own understanding and learning around that topic. Every Friday three people will present their DLO to give us practise at speaking to an audience.

Our Student Led Conferences

Today we carried out our first ever student led conferences. What an amazing success this was! The level of engagement and the conversations taking place were powerful and truly showed me how much information my class had taken ownership of.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who took part.

Practising for our Student Led Conferences

Here we are practising for our very first student led conferences. We are all looking forward to sharing our 2015 learning journey with our families.

Room 5's Collaborative Responses

Today we used Padlet to record our collaborative responses from our smart searching challenge to the questions:

  1. What is the difference between being a NZ citizen and a permanent resident?
  1. Why do people from other countries become NZ citizens?
  2. What would/has stopped people becoming NZ citizens? - obstacles (eg: cost of application)

Sharing our thinking

Today we worked in our Maths thinking groups to solve an addition problem. The task involved the students solving the problem independently, then explaining the strategy they used to their groups. Each group then chose the strategy they felt best suited the problem and created a collaborative DLO (of their choice) to help someone else learn that strategy. The final task was to present their DLO to the class. Fantastic work Room 5!

Tuakana Teina Time with R4

Today we had our tuakana teina time with R4. Room 4 are our gorgeous new entrants and have only been at school for four weeks. They are learning to read so today we read our buddies a story and then talked about the book with them. We had lots of fun and think R4 did a great job with their reading.

Kiwi Can 2015

Our Kiwi Can lessons this term are focussing around positive relationships and active listening, both skills that will help us make the most of our learning time. Today Miss Latoia and Mr M introduced us to positive communication by showing us how the tone of our voices can change the way people hear what we are saying. We used role plays to help us understand what positive communication looks like.
