Maths: Presenting Our Maths Games by Jack

This morning, Learning Space 2 showcased the maths games that we have all been working on for the last 2 weeks. My maths game allowed players to practice adding and subtracting decimal numbers. My game included a total of 10 questions, 5 subtraction, 5 addition. A few features that my game included was a scoreboard, an animated calculator as a character, and a certificate at the end that would certify your score. This whole activity started last week where we first needed to plan out the layout of our game. We would do this for the first two maths lessons, and when it was complete we would start getting to work. The program we all needed to use was simple Google Presentation, and to make it into an actual game we would use the linking feature, and link different boxes to other slides in the presentation. I along with the rest of the class had such an awesome time the last two weeks, and we were happy to be given such a fun activity to complete. If you would like to play my game, I have linked it below.

Manaiakalani Drawing Session by Nyjah

Last week Friday Alex, Jack and I taught a group of Manaiakalani teachers how to draw using google draw. We firstly presented a little DLO about a quick tutorial on how to draw using basic shapes and curve tools. After we gave a quick example on how to draw everyone tried drawing a flower to start  with. I was really proud of how most of them turned out. Teaching everyone was a challenge at first but when I kept going I got more confident and was able to help everyone by giving directions on how to use the tools and explore tool by myself.

Waltzing Matilda by Jack and Giovanni

Last week for reading, we started an activity. The activity was to read the poem Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson. After reading the poem, we needed to get into pairs, and analyse and unpack the  the poem. With this information we then needed to go through a couple of questions. This included which version of the poem did you prefer, the original or new version? What do you think the poem was about? And what Literary Devices could the poet use to paint a vivid image in our heads? Once those questions were answered, the final step was to create a DLO that would explain what the poem was about in a summary. To help keep our ideas in order, a template DLO was given to us which we could use to store our ideas. For this activity I worked Giovanni, and we had a lot of fun.

Teaching Teachers How To Use Goggle Drawing

On Friday after tech, Alex Nyjah and I taught a group of teachers how to use Google Drawing to create pictures, and how to use Google Slides to create animations. I along with my peers had so much fun teaching teachers, and we were very thankful for the opportunity that we were given. During the lesson, we showed everyone a presentation that we had all prepared the day before that would act as a tutorial for simple drawings. My favourite parts of the experience was meeting the teachers, and preparing the presentation as I enjoyed drawing images for examples.

Siri Group Challenge

Today, we have been given a challenge for writing by our teacher Mrs Anderson. Our challenge was to write in exactly 50 words, a response that Siri (An automated program on Apple devices) would give us if we asked it "Why Kokako Lodge is the greatest place to take year 7 and 8's on camp?" Although Mrs Anderson wanted to make this more of a challenge. So what we could do is gain points by using different Language features that would give us 5 points each. If every feature was used, then you could gain a total of 40 points. Although for another 5 points, you needed to make sure that everyone in your group was working together, and that a learning conversation was taking place. If you had exactly 50 words, and you used different references, you could even have 100 points total! Once you finished writing, you needed to digitally create a Siri conversation showing Siri's answer. The final step was to create a Screencastify that had us voicing over the whole conversation. For this activity, I worked with Julian, Jack, and Viliami. We had a lot of fun, and enjoyed recording the most.

Head Boy: Jack

Today was the first assembly for Term 1 of 2019 for Panmure Bridge School. This year, I am representing my school as head student, and I am very happy that I will be able to represent the school in many ways. For this weeks assembly, Mele and I spoke in front of the school, Julian and Fui showcased the new design to our school P.E kit, and all 6 leaders received their leadership badges. In my opinion, I thought we spoke really well, and that if we can keep our composure, and speak clearly, then we can become great leaders. After the assembly, photos were taken, and smiles could be seen across all of our faces. I hope that next week, we will have just as much fun as we did today.

Panmure Bridge - LS2's Manaiakalani Movie

Our movie captures our learning journey last term about the structure and construction of bridges. This was a very exciting term for us as we were a part of a research study carried out by the Augmented Human Lab at Auckland University. This meant that not only did we access our learning through our smart searching, we also had the opportunity to see our learning in context through the augmented reality (AR) lens with an expedition created solely for us. Along the way we discovered that back in 2009 Mr Johnston and a group of students had created a movie that told the story of Panmure's first bridge. Inspired by this, we created our updated homage to their movie and our learning.

Our Trip To The Sky Tower|By Jack

Today our class, along with a few others visited Auckland city to learn about the infamous Sky Tower. This may just seem like a cool trip that we had to pay a small fee for, but you'd be wrong as we were kindly funded this trip by Mr Douglas Bates. Because of his kind act, we along with Learning Space 1 and Room 5 learnt so much about our iconic structure. We learnt such things as the glass we were standing on was a whole 38mm thick! Also that the Sky Tower's weight is equivalent to 6,000 elephants! There are over 70 floors in the Sky Tower, and we only visited roughly 15% of it! The main part of the trip was visiting the main observing floor, which is floor 51. From here, you can see people bungee jumping off from the top, and at least 80km of land at every direction. While we were up here, we all had a little challenge for ourselves. We were all given a little booklet with blank boxes, with arrows pointing at a landmark. All around us were hand rails with information on them about nearby landmarks. Our challenge to figure out what to put in each blank box. I had a lot of fun learning a whole bunch today, and I believe that everyone else did too.

Reading: Harry's War DLO's | By Jack

This week for reading, we read the story Harry's War. We read this story with my reading group, and had a few DLO's to create. 1. A vocabulary DLO that showed all the new words in the story, 2. an Evaluating DLO that has what we learnt from the text, questions we have after reading, and what the text was about, 3. To create a DLO about the Bulford Kiwi, with different facts, and information about the Bulford Kiwi. For this activity, I worked with Sanujan, Joshua, Jericho, Mataio, Savelina, and Zane.

Inquiry: Mrs Gren DLO | By Jack

This week for inquiry, our focus was on the human body. To learn about what a living thing needs, we read a short story named Mrs Gren. Mrs Gren is a simple story about an old lady who find everything to be a living thing, because it could more, or breath, or sense, or grow, or reproduce, or excrete, or eat. Mrs Gren is also an acronym. It is made up of Movement, Respiration, Senses, Grow, Reproduction, Excrete, and Nutrition. All the things a living thing needs, or can do. We were to make a DLO with a partner, that explained each word, and what they mean to the human body. If you do not understand one of the words, you can look at the DLO, which explains each one. For this activity I worked with Sanujan, and we had a lot of fun doing this activity.

The Unfinished Drink - Reading | By Sanujan

This week for reading, we learnt about the story of Privet Ted (La Tour Mollet d'Auvergne). A poem written for Privet Ted was our main focus, because it told his story. We had two tasks to complete, 1 was to make a summary of the poem, and 2 was to create a DLO talking about Privet Ted's story. For both of these tasks, I worked with Jack, and we both decided to make a small animation for the DLO. This poem is both a sad, but happy poem. The sad part being Privet Ted never returning, but the happy part being him not forgotten. The full poem can be found midway through the animation if you want to read it yourself. Although unlike a real animation, this was done with a few different pictures, rather than over a hundred. In the end we think we did a great job, and that it turned out really well. Hopefully you think the same.

Professor Stephen Hawking | Sanujan, Alex, Jack, Julian

This week for inquiry Learning Space 2 were researching about Professor Stephen Hawking. Sadly on the 14 of March 2018 Professor Stephen Hawking Died by ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Professor Stephen Hawking was a Theoretical physicist who had a rare disease called Motor Neuron Disease. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) explaining how he died, who he was, why he was famous. I really loved making this DLO because on slide 5 you can see a Simpson version of Professor Stephen Hawking. For this task I worked collaboratively with Jack, Alex and Julian.

Jack - Inquiry: P.B.S & Winter Olympics Venn Diagram

This week for inquiry, we were asked to make a Venn Diagram, comparing the differences and similarities of Panmure Bridge School, and the 2018 Winter Olympics. For this activity, I worked with Sanujan, Nickaela, and Brooklyn. I learnt a lot from this activity, the biggest thing being that Panmure Bridge School, and the Olympics share some of the same values! This was surprising, but a great new fact that I had just learnt. A Venn Diagram for anyone who doesn't know, are 2 circles put together, to form 3 sections. The 2 outer sections are the differences between 2 subjects, while the centre is the similarities.

Screencastify: Blog Analysis - By Sanujan, Jack and Ofa

Jack, Ofa and Sanujan created this movie to share their learning following our statistical inquiry challenge. We all think the boys did a great job at explaining why blogging is an important part of our learning journey.

Maths: Elective Maths By Jack

This week for maths, our activity was about solving problems. This weeks problem was about elecives. It was about finding the amount of people in each elective group. There were 6 to find, but we also needed to figure out how many people had left the school to go to an inter school sports competition. So we needed to change the amount of kids who are left at school to get the correct answers. We then needed to make a DLO showing how we got our answers, and showing our answers. This activity could either be done individually, or with a partner or group. This time, I worked with Carl, and it was a really challenging activity, but on the other hand, really fun to work out. It took Carl and I roughly half an hour to get our answer, and once checked, we found that we got all of our answers and working out correct. All of our working out can be found in the DLO, including the problem as well.

Comparison Of Mascots - By Sanujan

The Winter Olympic is taking is occurring this year and it is taking place in Pyeongchang County, South Korea, on 9 of February - 25 February 2018. This week for Inquiry were creating a Comparison of the Winter Olympics' Mascots. I worked collaboratively with Jack, Nickaela and Brooklyn.

What we had to do
Our task was to create a Venn Diagram.
After that spent a few minutes searching for some Winter Olympic Mascots.
The Mascots we compared were, Soohrang, and Neve and Gliz.
Did you know that the Soohorang was selected as the mascot because the Soohorang represents a white tiger and white tigers have been the protecters of Korea for a long time.

Writing: Remembering Our Summer Holiday In 7 Sentences | By Jack

Today for writing, we needed to reflect a moment in our summer holidays. We were then given a template, with different human senses, and had to morph the senses into sentences about the event we chose to reflect. Once completed, we needed to show our work to a teacher, and illustrate the situation. The moment that I chose to reflect was when I went to a music store to get an amp with my guitar. I really liked this writing activity, and it really did get my imagination going wild once we had started illustrating.

Remembering our summer holiday
L.I. - Writing to recount
Writing using language features to engage readers

Complete these sentences about an event over the summer holiday. Don’t tell us what the event was just give us
enough information that we can know for ourselves.

I heard the ring as I walked through the door “RING”
I heard the instruments strumming, followed by a charming sound of an angel singing.
I saw many different shaped objects surrounding the room, like bees defending their hive.
I felt the vibrations from the differently pitched tones.
I felt each string get thinner and thinner the further I ran my fingers down the instrument, like a blunt knife getting
sharper and sharper.
I wondered if one day I could perform with my new hobby, and make a living out of it in the future.
Although I wondered how long this hobby would continue, I just continued to experiment with what I had.
