Celebrating the Winter Blogging Challenge

Congratulations to all our Winter Blogging Challenge participants, especially to AJ, Daniel and Nesi who posted the highest number of challenges and comments. Rachel from Auckland University came to present the prizes and certificates in assembly. Well done to everyone who took part, you are all such great role models for our younger students. We would also like to say a big thank you to Rachel who creates and runs the blogging challenges for all the commenting she did on our blogs over the holiday break.

Buddy Reading with R3 and R4

On Friday our NE/Y1 students came to visit us in LS2 for our first buddy reading session. It was great to see how our Y7/8's brought the magic of reading alive for our youngest students. All of us are looking forward to doing this again next week.

PBS Book Character Parade

To celebrate book week at PBS we all dressed up as our favourite characters from books we have read. During our special assembly we were visited by The White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, who brought us a letter from the Queen of Hearts. The Junior school had visitors from the Panmure Library and the Remuera Rotary Club; Constable Cyrus and Ms Sorrenson who came to read them stories. What a great way to bring the magic of books alive!

Collaborative Advertising Challenge by Calvin

These are our Advertisements that we did for reading and writing. We made these in groups of 3 and 4's. We had to do these information in races and who ever comes first they get to have chocolate bars. We mostly had fun but we did not win. We enjoyed it and had fun.

Collaborative Advertising Challenge by Thomas

Today we read a text on advertising and learnt some new things about it, then create this paragraph using 25 words exactly to explain our knowledge of it.

Duffy Books

Today we all received our Duffy books at assembly. Nicole, our Life education facilitator helped Ms Kirkpatrick present them to everyone. There were big smiles all round as everyone has a book they chose to boost their reading mileage over the holidays.

Leadership Learning by Charlize

Yesterday  Lynne Le Gros from Spark, came in our school teaching us about leadership.
Why was she talking about leadership? Well, one of the reasons why is because it was leadership week, and who better to talk about on leadership day, than Sir Peter Blake. If you don't know who that is, he was a sailor who won in the 1989 to 1997 race around the world. He had the fastest time, so he made New Zealand very proud. Sadly, one day his ship was attacked by pirates and was murdered. He is a great example of a leader because he believed in himself. After her speech on Sir Peter Blake, Lynne gave us a piece of paper and told us to right down who we look up to as a role model and why. After that she gave us a card (picture above) to write down what we wanted to be when we got older and what our dream for NZ would be.

End of term certificate celebrations

Congratulations to our fabulous LS2 learners who received certificates at assembly today.

Get Wise with Jeremy

Today we had our sessions with Jeremy from Get Wise. He gave us some really valuable advice that will help us think carefully about the pathway we walk when we come to the crossroads in our lives. We found out that a bank account is there to help us manage and grow our money. To grow our bank accounts we need to liken saving to training in sport... the earlier we start developing our saving skills the better off we'll be. One way of doing this is to think of  'SSOY SST' Spend some on you... Save some too!

Life Education - Session 1

Today we had our first sessions with Nicole in the Life Education caravan today. Our lessons today were about our body systems, our brain and our heart.

Read Zeba's reflection to see what the Year 8's learnt.

As part of our first year 8 Life Education Session, we learnt about the body system and how it is important to know how our body works. First talked about how the heart really isn't the shape of the heart inside of you. Nicole ( the teacher) told us that if you put two hearts together it make the heart symbol. We also learnt how our nerves send the messages to our brain wich creates our reaction, it is like a motorway. It was clearly explained because she had a projector where we could see what it actually looked like and what she was talking about. We also played two games, one was where she would call out a number we had to clap that same amount if we did too many, we were out. The next game out of the 5 senses we were using touch so both teams had a race to who could reach the person at the end first both. These games were a lot of fun. I found it useful how the kidneys take water from your brain if you don't drink enough water this creates a headache but is also due to stress.

Read Mishaan's reflection to see what the Year 7's learnt.

Today the year 7 went to Life Education. This was the first session of Life Education. Nicole the Life ED teacher she is the one that has been talking to us about our body system like nervous - nerves/reactions, circulatory - blood, muscular - muscles. We have learned a lot in Life ED for our first session. It was good learning also good understanding about our body system. One thing I learned was the heart, Some people think that the heart looks like a heart and it's on the side on your left but it actually looks like your fist and it's in the middle where it has the vanes connected to it. When you break the heart into two parts and connect together it will shape kind of like a love heart and Bob was a hologram.

Winter Learning Journey

Today Rachel from Woolf Fisher came to talk to us about the Winter Learning Journey. This is an online program that sets our learners daily blogging challenges. Many of us took part in the Summer Learning Journey and enjoyed the challenges it set us. The new challenge runs from the start of the holidays on Saturday 9 July and runs until the last day of the holidays on Sunday 24 July. The theme of the challenges this time around will be based on the Olympic games in Rio.
